Lent a season to forgive

Forgiveness is not always easy. At times, it feels more painful than the wound we suffered, to forgive the one that inflicted it. And yet, there is no peace without forgiveness. Marianne Williamson

Lent is here again, a 40 day season where as children of Saint Moses Orimolade we are encouraged to:

  • Wear a red girdle representing the blood of Jesus shed on Calvary for the redemption of our sins and a remembrance of his suffering for the Salvation of our souls.
  • Only solemn songs are rendered as a time of brokenness and seeking Gods face for mercy
  • No drums, loud singing or jubilation but a time of seeking Gods face in His words
  • Focus on the sins of unforgiveness, lying, lacking charity, greed, lust of the flesh and idolatry and ways to live a life that reflects Christ through His LOVE, Forgiveness, humility, charity and holiness
  • A season where we re-evaluate our walk with Christ and seek to increase more in His Spirit
  • To observe the 40 days fast season nil by mouth 6am – 6pm and taking the hours of prayer seriously

So what is Lent?

Lent is a season of the Christian Year where Christians focus on simple living, prayer, and fasting in order to grow closer to God. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Saturday, Lent is the forty-day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, in which Christians follow obligatory rules for fasting, spiritual recognition and repentance.

By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Whereas Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his death on the cross, Lent recalls the events leading up to and including Jesus’ crucifixion by Rome. This is believed to have taken place in Roman occupied Jerusalem.

Why 40 days?

40 is a significant number in Jewish-Christian scripture:

  • In Genesis, the flood which destroyed the earth was brought about by 40 days and nights of rain.
  • The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God.
  • Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the ten commandments on Mount Sinai.
  • Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry.

Most Christians regard Jesus’ time in the wilderness as the key event for the duration of Lent. WE PRAY THE STRENGTH OF GOD FOR YOU IN THIS TIME OF LENT IN JESUS NAME.

2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. 3For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me.…pSALM 51:2
